Balloon Ghost: To make this fun Halloween decoration you will need a white balloon, scissors, white plastic grocery or garbage bags, tape, string and a black marker. Cut the plastic bags into strips leaving an uncut edge to hold the strips together. Blow up the balloon. Tape the cut up bags around the balloon to make the ghost’s body. Make sure the balloon is upside down when you tape the bags on so that you have something to hang the ghost from. Draw a face on the balloon to make the ghost’s head. Tie a string to the balloon and hang the ghost up.

Egg Carton Spider: For this craft project you will need an egg carton, googly eyes, scissors, pipe cleaners and crayons, markers, or colored pencils. Cut one section out of the egg carton. Draw a face on the spider with crayons, markers, or colored pencils.

Pompom Spider: Supplies needed for this craft are yarn, scissors, pipe cleaners, cardboard, glue and googly eyes. Cut yarn into a 2 foot long piece and a yard long piece. Cut a piece of cardboard into a 3 inch by 2 inch rectangle. Loosely wrap the yard of yarn around the cardboard piece. Take the yarn off the cardboard, being careful to make sure the loops stay together. Put 4 pipe cleaners on the yarn loops. Tie the yarn loops and pipe cleaners together tightly with the 2 foot piece of yarn. Cut the loops in half to make a pompom shape. Bend the pipe cleaners in the shape of spider legs. Glue googly eyes onto the spider.

Pasta and Beans Skeleton: This craft project is made with a piece of black construction paper, glue, dried beans and several types of pasta (small shells, wagon wheels, ziti, elbow macaroni, salad macaroni, spaghetti, spirals, etc.). Lay out the pasta and beans in the shape of a skeleton. Elbow macaroni is good for ribs. Spaghetti can be used as toes and fingers. Small shells or small beans make good joints. Lima beans are perfect for hips. After you are satisfied with the layout of your skeleton, glue it down.

Ghost Necklace: For this craft project you will need Elmer’s glue, a small paper clip, googly eyes, wax paper and string. On wax paper, make a ghost shape out of your glue. After a few days, the glue will turn completely clear. Peel it off the wax paper and thread your string through the paper clip to turn it into a necklace.

Jack-o-lantern Pinata: Make a perfect Halloween party item by gathering a balloon, newspaper, flour, water, a bowl, a pot, a wooden spoon, scissors, orange craft paint, a paintbrush and a black marker. Make papier-mâché glue by mixing 1/2 cup of flour into 1/2 cup of water. Then stir the flour and water mix into 2 cups of boiling water. Simmer for a few minutes. Let it cool. Take newspaper and tear into 1 inch wide strips. Dip strips of paper in the glue and wrap around the balloon. Repeat process, covering the entire balloon. Let a layer dry and then add another layer. It dry completely, then pop the balloon, and remove it. Cut a small hole in the top to put in the candy. Decorate with the orange craft paint and black marker, making a jack-o-lantern face. Hang the pinata and have a party!

Cereal Box Haunted House

This spooky house project is ideal for older children. Open the top flaps of an empty cereal box and tape the edges together to form a peaked roof shape. Cut out holes for windows and doors, and then paint the outside of the box black. Glue or tape yellow or white tissue paper in the “windows” from the inside of the box. Using construction paper, glue, white chalk and other decorative craft items, decorate the outside of the haunted house, making it as creepy as possible. Place a small flashlight inside the box and turn it on to light up the windows.

My kids were not too happy when I told them they’d have to make do with last years costumes or come up with some ideas from home. I wished I could get them some cool costumes for kids, but it just wasn’t possible this year. I just didn’t know where I could come up with the extra money. I’m a single mom with three kids and I have a hard enough time buying shoes and school clothes, and kids halloween costumes isn’t at the top of the list. I hated seeing their disappointed faces when I told them, but I had no options. When you’re broke, you’re broke. They just couldn’t grasp the fact that I couldn’t afford new costumes this time.

Then the other day while I was at my neighbors house, she told me about all the kid halloween costumes she just had bought. I couldn’t believe she was able to buy new costumes for all the kids, since she has to stretch every dollar like I do. She told me she had found an online site that had a cheap, but really cool childrens costume selection. Of course, I made her give me the website address. There were so many different children costume selections to choose from. It was surprising how cheap they all were. She’s the only one of the three that is positive on what she wants to wear. Halloween Party Ideas for Kids
There are three main types of Halloween parties. One is for young children that should be fun and not too scary. One is for teenagers that should also be fun but the scarier the better and one for adults that gives them the opportunity to express an alter ego.

For children 3 to 7 years there are games with a Halloween theme:
Halloween Bingo—make Bingo cards with pumpkins, black cats, witches etc. in the grid squares. These can be made with stickers.

Eyeball Toss—make ping pong balls look like eyeballs with markers and toss them into a hollowed out pumpkin.

Candy Hunt—a good way to limit the amount of candy they get and yet they have fun looking for it.

For older kids the games are a little more sophisticated. Scavenger Hunt is a traditional Halloween game and can be great fun and challenging. Lists are compiled with the objects to be found, the children choose teams, two to four people on a team, and the time limit is set. The first team back within the time with all the items on the list is the winner.

One game that can be played several possible ways is played with food. A person is blindfolded and has to guess the body parts put in front of him. These body parts are made with food. Pealed grapes for eyeballs, cooked spaghetti for intestines, mashed potatoes for brains, unpopped corn for teeth, thin carrots for fingers are a few suggestions. Usually a story goes with the game such as this is all that is left of a dear, departed friend.

Horror movie or TV trivia is a good subject for a quiz or guessing game. This takes a little time to research, but children love to exhibit their knowledge and it’s a good time to remember all the scary scenes in movies. It also makes a great charades game.

Set the Mood and the Food
The most common Halloween decorations are pumpkins and black cats, but there are a lot more possibilities. For the young children’s parties, large colorful decorations are fun with bats, spiders, witches on broomsticks and possibly a skeleton or two. For older kids there are some great possibilities for making a spooky atmosphere. Turn off the lights and light candles, provided it can be fire safe. This adds confusion as well as surprise. Make some ghastly heads out of Styrofoam, acrylic paint and modeling clay. Use them as centerpieces on the buffet table. The food on the buffet table can also be part of the decoration. Spider cookies made with cream filled cookies and pretzels for legs and foods that fit the orange and black color theme such as baby carrots, cheddar cheese cubes, licorice, orange slices and dark purple grapes.

Halloween is the time when people turn to indoor fun, at least in the northern hemisphere, and a Halloween party for kids is something special. It is a day children especially enjoy, and a party can combine costumes, atmosphere, prizes for games and food for a great experience.
