Fun and creative ideas for children’s halloween costumes

Children love to dress up in costumes during Halloween. The costumes look very cute and the children thoroughly enjoy themselves during that time. A lot of creativity is involved in choosing and making costumes for the young ones.

Children can be dressed in various types of costumes according to the fancy of the parents and the children. The children identify themselves with the characters in cartoons, movies and fairy tales. You can choose any theme and then create a dress accordingly.

There are many stores that stock up costumes for children that can be worn during Halloween. You can also look at magazines to get ideas. You can browse the internet and either order from the stores or with the available ideas and create a dress for the young one.

The children can be dressed as cartoon characters such a Minnie Mouse and Mickey Mouse or Tom and Jerry. Donald Duck is another favorite. Other cartoon characters from the Flintstone or the Simpsons family can also be tried out.

You can dress children in scary costumes such as the devil, a vampire, a ghost, a skeleton or a pirate. They will have fun scaring people at the party. They love dressing up as Superman, Superwoman, or Spiderman. These costumes are available in stores. Children also relate to real life people whom they see everyday, such as the postman, the policeman, the fireman or the policeman. These costumes are also like by children. Birds such as the peacock and animals such as the bear, the lion or the tiger are also favorites with them.

]]>

Most of these costumes can either be ordered or bought from your nearby store. You can also book online for them. The best way would, of course, be to create your own costume for the child. This way, the child will be involved in the process of making the costume. You will know how the dress fits the child.
You can make adjustments accordingly. You can use an old pair of jeans and an old shirt to make the costumes of animals and birds. All the cartoon characters also need the exact color of dress with the special feature of that character.

You can buy all the accessories from the store. All the essential add-ons like belts, scarves, paints to color and make masks, wigs and hats will completely change the look of address. The face can either be painted or a mask can be used. The paint used should not harm the skin. False eyelashes and eyebrows, hair extensions will add to the special look for the girls’ costume.

Care should be taken to see that the dress is neither too tight nor too loose. This will be uncomfortable for the child. The accessories such a veil or wings should be well secured and should not come off or prick or harm the girls. The costume itself should have reflectors so that people can see them in the dark when they go ‘trick a treat’. It would best if flame resistant clothing is chosen so that they are safe when near a candle or a source of fire.

It is fun dressing up the little girls and boys in different costumes. This gives joy not only to the child but also the parents. There is immense joy and fun in creating costumes for the children. You can shop and buy all the material and if necessary make it by stitching the costume with the material available at home.

The choice should be made carefully. The dress should suit your personality and that of the partner. You should immerse yourself in the character of the part you are playing, so that it will be difficult to identify you.

House Cleaning Can be Fun

Spring house cleaning is a chore that practically no one looks forward to, yet every spring we seem to be struck by the “anti-clutter bug.” Closets seem to burst with items collected over the year and may even tumble down when you open the door, and the garage can barely hold the car. While you have the urge to complete this task, procrastination often prevents us from going through with it. Here are some tips to make your house cleaning and decluttering go faster and in a more organized fashion:

You don’t have to make a day of the entire project. A lot of people start out with the best of intentions-to muck the house out in one fell swoop. The result is that they soon lose interest because the chore proves to be overwhelming, and the clutter is left to accumulate for another season while you feel bad and eat a bag of chips.

Before you even start, call your local charity that picks up donations and make an appointment for them to stop by. Now you have a deadline and thus, a goal! Make sure the pick up day is realistic in relation to your house cleaning; you’ll probably have to go through the closets and store the donation pile in the garage, saving that area for last, and then taking it all to the curb the night before the scheduled pick up.

]]>

Start with the worst closet and go from there. One closet on one weekend day should be sufficient to keep the spring house cleaning bug at bay, and help you feel as if you’ve actually accomplished something. (If you’re working on the garage, you may choose to use an entire weekend.) Take a deep breath and pull everything out of the closet and onto the floor. Don’t stop to sort through, just shove it all out at once. Then start sorting the pile. One pile should be “keepers,” one for “donate,” and one for “take to the dump.” Making the choice to donate or take items to the dump will be easier for those of you who have a propensity for being a pack rat by following this simple rule of thumb; if you haven’t thought about where it is or used it within the last six months, it could probably be donated or trashed.

Use translucent storage bins to organize items to be kept but re-stored in the garage, a tall metal shelf can be purchased at any home improvement outlet, and sorting items into bins pre labeled will make your house cleaning go by that much faster. You can even buy colored bins for holidays-green and red for Christmas and orange and black for Halloween decorations. Use a clean, 33 gallon garbage can lined with a bag and set it right next to where you are sorting, it will save a ton of time and back strain instead of lugging out individual garbage bags as you fill them.

With a little forethought and a plan, you can turn the seemingly endless task of organizing and major house cleaning for the year into a few weekends well worth your time.

Halloween Ghosts Made Fun

Enjoyable simple decorative ghost ideas you are able to create in your own home. Old sheets, paper muffin cups, marshmallows, boiled eggs. These products can become mummies, ghosts, witches and much more. A small creativity and these products could be cleverly arranged spooky decorations.
1. Ceiling Ghosts. You might already have white paper cupcake cups, these make awesome ghosts. Utilizing the jumbo or king-sized cupcake liners are best. Turn them upside down. Now cut small black eyes out of a black piece of felt, glue them up near the top portion of the upside down liner, you can also use black paper-brad eyes found inside your local craft or office-supply store. If brass paper-brads are all that are available, you can use a black marker to paint them black. Make at least three pair of eyes for every cupcake liner so as they turn, you are able to see ghost eyes from every angle.
To hang them, thread a needle with monofilament or black thread, doubled and knotted, and pierce a paper liner from the inside. Pull the needle thru till the liner sits on the knot. Cut the monofilament next to the needle, then tie the ends together to create a hanging lip. Hang them from a chandelier, a ceiling light fixture or from the ceiling using a tack to hold it in place.
2. Errie small frosting Ghosts. These small ghosts take little time to produce. Lets begin by creating the white frosting.one and 1/2 cups sugar1/3 cup cold watertwo egg whites1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar or two teaspoons light corn syrupone teaspoon vanilla extractPlastic meal storage bagLittle sugar candy eyes, two for every ghostEggcups, cordial glasses, or any little dish or bowl
This recipe makes four cups frosting, sufficient for about 8 small ghosties. The frosting becomes rock hard if left to air-dry for two weeks. You are able to eat them when fresh should you desire or save them for Halloween decorations for a future party.
Combine the sugar, water, egg whites, and cream of tartar in the top of the double boiler: Using an electric mixer on low speed, beat the ingredients for 30 seconds to combine it all.
Boil a little quantity of water in the bottom from the double boiler. Place the top portion of the double boiler onto the bottom portion. Cook the frosting on medium heat, beating constantly with the mixer on high for about 7 minutes or till the frosting forms stiff peaks when the beaters are lifted. Remove the top portion of the double boiler from the bottom piece, and if using the vanilla extract, stir it in with a spoon or a rubber spatula. Beat the frosting for two or three minutes more or till it’s spreadable. Permit the frosting to cool till it’s slightly warm or at room temperature.
To create the small ghosties, spoon the frosting into a plastic meal storage bag, then snip off 1 corner of the bag, creating a 1/4-inch opening. Pipe the frosting into the eggcups 1 layer at a time. Applying pressure to the bag, squeeze out sufficient frosting to fill the eggcup untill it is level with the top edge. Then create a second layer on top of the level cup of frosting, making this layer slightly more compact all the way around . Create another layer on top of the second one, once again making it smaller around then the last one, then a fourth layer smaller around once again then the last one, then the final fifth layer smaller then the last layer but bringing this layer to a point. With every layer decrease the pressure as you slowly lift the plastic bag of frosting till the small ghost is the desired size depending on the size of cup you use. An eggcup tends to works best. Next step, tweezers are recommended, for the best control, press the sugar candy eyes in the desired spot up near the pointed final layer of frosting. As soon as the ghosts are dry, wrap each ghost in tissue paper and place in a container and store them in a cool, dry spot

Halloween Games Make Math Fun

We all know how excited children become as Halloween draws closer. But instead of Halloween being a distraction to kids, why not harness this Halloween energy into some Halloween math practice.

Halloween gives parents and teachers a wonderful tool to motivate kids to do math. These Halloween math activities can be used at school with a whole class or a small group or at home with siblings playing against each other or a child playing with an adult.

Listed below are few different ways to get kids counting, calculating and practicing math skills.

Spooky

Buzz is a favorite counting game for many children. But you are bound to find that they’ll like the Halloween version even more.

Players sit in a circle and start to count around the circle. But when a player comes to the number 7, a multiple of 7, e.g. 14 or 35 or any number with a 7 digit, e.g. 27, the player says buzz instead of the number. When a player doesn’t say ‘Buzz’ at the appropriate time, the player is out.

In the Halloween version the word buzz can be replaced with a Halloween word, e.g. ‘spooky’ or ‘scary’ or ‘ghost’. Try to count to 70 which would be a ‘spooky’ number and then continue on counting – spooky-one, spooky-two, etc as players can’t say ‘seventy-one’.

]]>

4 Dice Skeleton

This game requires 4 dice and a copy of the alphabet with a number value beside each letter, i.e. a-1, b-2, c-3, d-4 etc. Each player also has a piece of paper with 8 dashes on it, ready to write the word SKELETON.

The object of the game is to write the word SKELETON, by rolling the total value for each letter.

If a player rolls 5, 3, 3 and 1, these are added to 12 which is a letter ‘L’. The player can then put the letter ‘L’ into their word. If a player rolls 1, 1, 1 and 2, they can write in the letter ‘E’ both times in the word. The first player to finish their word SKELETON is the winner. The game can also be played with other Halloween words, but don’t include any words that contain an A, B, C, Y or Z as with 4 dice it is impossible to throw 1, 2, 3, 25 or 26. Try using the words – FRIGHTEN, MONSTER or PUMPKIN. Words like HALLOWEEN, FRANKENSTEIN or JACK-O’-LANTERN can also be used if the A’s and C’s are written in before starting the game.

A shorter version of this game is to have each person working on completing one word.

The person who completes it with the last letter is the winner.

Halloween Brain Teasers

Halloween Brain Teasers are also a great way to get kids busy with math. Simply take your favorite Brain Teasers and change the characters and situations to a Halloween character or situation.

Here’s a couple to get you started.

Dracula only likes red candy and Frankenstein only likes black candy. There are 6 pieces of red candy, 9 pieces of black candy and 4 pieces of blue candy in a bag. What is the minimum number of pieces of candy that Dracula will need to pick, without looking at them to make sure that he gets at least 1 piece of red candy? How many pieces will Frankenstein need to pick out to make sure he gets at least 1 black piece?

Dracula has 3 pairs of pants – black, brown and blue, 2 shirts – black and white and 3 capes – black, red and blue. Name all of the different outfits that he can wear, e.g. black pants, white shirt and red cape. How many different outfits can he make?

There are many different ways to use Halloween to make math more exciting. You’ll find that children will definitely agree that Halloween math is much more interesting than doing regular math. So instead of trying to dampen the enthusiasm for Halloween why not use it to make math fun?

Teresa Evans is a teacher and parent who uses math games to get kids excited about math. She shares her favorite math games at MakingMathMoreFun.com. Visit www.makingmathmorefun.com/halloweenmath.htm to learn more about Halloween math games.

Scare Up Some Fun On Halloween

Halloween History

The history of Halloween dates back a couple thousand years to the Celtic people who lived in what is now Great Britain and Northern France.  The Celts lead by Druid Priests practiced pagan rituals on October 31st, a day that marked the change from Fall to Winter.  The day now is a mix of these ancient Celtic practices, folk traditions, Harvest celebrations, along with Roman and Catholic rituals.  The Catholic observance of All Saints Day gave rise to the observance of  ’All Hallows Eve’ for the night before November 1st which eventually morphed into the name, Halloween.

Although religion and superstitions surrounded the holiday, by the 19th century Halloween  became a secular based Holiday.  It is hard to say how an event filled  with demons, witches and walking dead became a children’s and family holiday but it is now celebrated around the world. Many of the original observances of bon fires, costumes and bobbing for apples have remained. In most places kids dress up as ghosts and goblins, people decorate homes with black cats and spider webs while Haunted Houses are created just for the occasion.

Halloween activities now include adult and kids events, club nights, corn field mazes,  jack-o-lantern carving and trick or treating.  ‘Trick-or-Treating’ is still the main reason kids love Halloween… free candy!  Also derived from a Medieval tradition, Children dressed in costumes go door to door begging for a treat with the threat of playing a trick on anyone who doesn’t add to their sack of sweets. The candy and food industries have taken advantage of Holiday and packaged every type of treat into small sizes that are perfect for parties and Trick-or-Treaters.

Spooky sales return economy from the dead

The Holiday is sweet for American retailers who predict this year consumers will spend a whopping billion dollars on candy, costumes and decorations.  40% of adults will dress up for Halloween, 70 % will hand out candy.  As Americans we tend to take an event and run with it, loving to go over-the-top with decor and food.  Some people spend months decorating for Halloween with elaborate displays designed to scare the kids and shock the neighborhood. Over half of the population will decorate their homes and almost everyone will participate  in some way.  Halloween is not the biggest Holiday but it is a merchandising bonanza with lot of stuff to buy for no reason except for fun.  People like the chance to be creative, cut loose and go out on the town in disguise. The event is becoming less and less about children. The majority spent on costumes, over a billion dollars annually, goes toward adults.  11 %  of Halloween fans say they will also dress up their pets.

Halloween signifies the changing weather and in the USA it is the kick-off to the “Holiday Season” (closely followed by Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years).  The money spent celebrating the Holiday is an indicator used to predict the upcoming Holiday shopping season.

Haunted Halloween

Even though Halloween is about witches, monsters and creepy crawly things people love it. It is like watching a horror film where we welcome a chance to be frightened out of our wits! Even though it promotes gruesome imagery the holiday didn’t actually grow out of evil practices. Much of the Halloween legend, like Vampires and Werewolves have grown from films and popular culture.  It serves as a chance to celebrate the Fall season and maybe live out a fantasy for the night in your chosen costume. The day and night can be as scary as you want to make it!

Make Your Halloween Party More Fun with These 7 Game Ideas

We know that children love to play games at parties, but this doesn’t mean that adults would not enjoy playing games. Think about what kinds of games and activities your guests would enjoy, and get everything you need ready in advance.

Also be sure to have some extra Halloween activities in case a game that you are expecting to take 45 minutes only lasts for 20.

And do not forget the Halloween prizes, these can be easily and inexpensively assembled by a quick trip to your local novelty or dollar store or ordered online to be delivered straight to your door.

1. TIE AN ORANGE RIBBON: This game is a great way to start your party. Use Orange Gossamer Streamers, and cut the streamers into various lengths (at least 100-400 uneven pieces). Pair everyone up and have them search for as many pieces of streamer as they can find. They must work with their partner to tie each piece of streamer together to create one long piece of streamer. Whoever has the longest piece of streamer at the end of 15 minutes wins the game (It is OK if not every piece of ribbon is found).

2. WHO AM I?: Write the names of famous people from scary movies (can be character names or actor names, e.g. Dracula or Vincent Price) on index cards, and tape one card to the back of each guest. Have everyone walk around in the same room, and instruct them not to mention the name on each person’s back, but to talk to everyone as if they are the person whose name is on their card. As people begin to correctly guess their identity, they have to continue to treat the people who still don’t know their identity like the stars whose name is taped to their back. When everyone guesses their “true identity”, then the game is over.

3. RELAY RACES: If you want to get a little crazy, or if you have teenagers that need to let off a little energy, these relay races are sure to bring out the goofy side in everyone!

4. EVIL TWIN RELAY: Divide your guests into two teams. The Siamese Twins are formed by having 2 players stand back-to-back while linking their arms at the elbows. Have two guests demonstrate before the race begins. Their arms must stay linked at all times!! Have them try to walk together. Have the guests pair up with someone on their team. On the signal “Go”, the first set of Siamese Twins will walk to the bucket. When they reach the bucket, each player will take one treat out and then return to the starting line making sure that their arms are linked at all times! Continue playing until all of your guests have retrieved a prize from the bucket. The first team done wins!

5. SUCK IT UP: Put two chairs at one end of the room and put an empty Halloween container on each chair. Divide your guests into two teams and line them up in straight lines. Give everyone a straw and a ghost eraser. The first person in each line places the straw in their mouth and sucks in so that the ghost eraser sticks to the end. While continuing to suck in, they walk to the chair and drop their ghost into the container. They run back to the line and the next person will go. Be careful not to make your teammates laugh – it might cost you the game!

6. MYSTERIOUS BALLOON RELAY: Cut paper into small pieces. Think of some activities (take a drink, scream loudly, kiss someone) and write them on two pieces of paper (one for each team). Place one paper slip into a balloon and blow it up. Continue until you have enough balloons for each guest. Place the balloons in bags at the opposite end of the room. The first person in the team must run down, get a balloon, pop it, read the activity, do the activity and tag the next person in line. First team done wins!

7. HALLOWEEN STICKER STALKER: When your guests arrive, give each person 10 Halloween stickers. The object is to use up all your stickers by sticking on other guests – one sticker per guest. However, if the guest you are “stickering” catches you, he/she gets to stick one of his/her stickers on you. If you are “caught”, you must temporarily take your sticker back, and you can try to sticker that same person later (at your own risk). But if someone falsely accuses you of “stickering” him/her, then you can automatically put one of your stickers on that person. The first one to get rid of all 10 of their original stickers is the winner!

And, whatever you do, have a Spooktacular Halloween!
